There is nothing more satisfying than nailing your fairway wood off the fairway you've just hit a great drive. And you want to reach a par five in two i'm going to show you how you can nail your fairway wood off the ground more often than ever before with some really simple tips [Music] hi guys i'm rick shields pga golf professional if you are new to my youtube channel welcome hit that subscribe button. So you don't miss out on any videos hit the like button if you enjoy this video and leave me a comment down below what three wood do you have in the bag currently okay. So you found the middle of the fairway yet you're still a long way to the green this might be a par five that you want to try and reach into or a super long path for this is where nailing your fairway wood is key to lowering your score being able to execute this shot gives you. So much power in the game because closer you get to the green hopefully on the green you can make the best score possible now a three wood is the longest club you're going to carry in your bag you're likely to hit off the floor. And that's what makes this shot the most challenging being able to judge where the bottom of the golf club hits the ground is essential. And that's what i'm going to show you right now in this video hitting a 3-wood off the tee is slightly easier the ball is pegged up. And it gives you the luxury of being able to lean back and almost hit the ball on the way up when the ball is on the ground you don't have that luxury anymore. So hitting up on the ball isn't going to work when the shot when the ball is on the fairway because as soon as you start hitting up you could easily hit the ground behind the ball. Or if you miss the ground you're going to top the ball that might be where you score the three wood along the ground i'm going to show you some really simple ways to make sure that you make that clean contact. And ideally just hit that slightly more downward blow when the ball is on the fairway as opposed to when it's on a t. So when i set up to the three wood if i think about how i set up to it off a t i'd have that ball position fairly close to my left foot. So almost forward in my stance and i would encourage the body to slightly tilt backwards getting that spine angle tilting away from the ball that's going to help me hit up on the ball it's grey off a t on the fairway we don't particularly want those movements. So i'm going to bring the ball position about a ball closer to the middle of my stance that's going to help me hit slightly more neutral angle of attack. Or slightly down on the golf ball that's going to be great with a 3-wood off the floor with the upper body i'm trying to get now the sternum to sit more on top of the club head i don't particularly want the sternum to lean back too much because again i don't be hitting up on the golf ball here now when i make contact i'm looking at trying to take the smallest divot when i hit the golf ball trying to hit the ball first. And then.
Taking a tiny divot just past the golf ball is going to be key because the bottom of the golf club is nice. And flat you're not likely to dig the club too much into the ground it's not going to just dig in the ground. And never come back up the likeliness at the bottom of the golf club is going to skim through the surface make great connection with the ball. And but before you know it the ball is flying towards the green. And you fit a great shot so ball position just slightly back to where i'd normally play it slightly closer to the middle of my stance my sternum is over the top of the club head. And as i come to hit this i'm looking at hitting just past the golf ball and hitting a very small divot it's going to help me strike the ball as clean as i can hit it oh i'll take that every day yeah that's crushed now what you'll see in the slow mo there i didn't particularly lean my body back i wasn't trying to lift the golf ball up in the air which is the mistake a lot of players make with a 3-wood i was making sure that my body weight was still moving around towards my left-hand side making sure that i move with the golf shot as opposed to leaning back. And again bottoming out behind the golf ball i'll hit another one so ball position just slightly more central than normal my sternum is over the top of my club head. And i'm looking at trying to take the very smallest divot just past the golf ball that way you're making really clean connection and i just feel confident i'll just scuff the grass up there be up past the ball and that's giving me that confidence that i'm hitting it in the right spot a great tip for this if you've got a bit of time to practice when you're on the grass stick a t-peg in the ground about an inch and a half past the golf ball so if you're struggling getting that movement to the left it's a great little tip to encourage that movement and that downward strike to make that really good connection so now i'm going to focus on making sure that i almost skim that out of the ground as i hit the three-wood here. And that way you're making that cleaner connection i've not quite skimmed out the ground but i know that the bottom of the golf club was close to the tee as i hit it that time guys thanks. For watching you are going to reach more par fives in two you are gonna hit longer par fours. And you're gonna hit these three woods much better you've got to separate the gap between hitting a fairway wood off a tee and hitting it off the fairway there is a clear difference. And it's going to help you hit it better going through this method today.
Thanks.
