So for the last 20 years or so the golf ball i've typically used has been the titlish pro v1 a number of reasons for that one it's a great performing golf ball when it first came out in early 2000's it really did change golf ball technology. And i've typically always stayed towards it if i've ever had a choice of golf ball to use i go with a pro v1 whenever i do all my equipment testing i want a golf ball that people know is the gold standard of testing. And as i mentioned there's not a lot to fault now over that time frame i've dabbled a few times in different golf balls certainly in more recent years i've toured with the taylormade tp5 quite a lot again really good golf ball but somehow the pro v1 keeps dragging me back to use it just because for me i just don't want any uncertainty when it comes to golf balls i've got a big test now for pro v1 because as we start the year 2021 a brand new version of the pro v1 and the pro v1x are now out. But also srixon have brought out their new zed star this is the zed star which is to compete against the pro v1. And there's the zed star x v which is a basically the pro v1x equivalent now on paper these golf balls match up the technology everything that goes into it. And when you read the boxes they should be exactly the same let's see if that's going to be the case. But the one thing you'll see this year and many years gone past is the shrixen is typically cheaper roughly depends on where you're buying from five to ten pound a dozen cheaper. So i'm gonna see today.
If the shrieks. And golf ball stacks up in performance feel etc to the pro v1 because if then.
You're in doubt or think about which ball to try you might pick up the cheaper option save you some money. So to kick things off i've already done a field test with these golf balls i've always been a big fan of how the pro v1 feels it's soft without being super soft it has good control around the greens and it feels good and grippy on chip shots this year's models the pro v1 and pro v1x feel almost exactly the same as every other pro v1 i've tested in the last few years which is a positive good feel good performance now the shrieksen in contrast certainly the zed star i'm going to start this off there first is definitely softer than its counterpart the pro v1 off the putter face with the wedges the shrieks. And golf ball felt softer and i must admit i was a big fan of that the tricks. And zed star xv was very similar to the pro v1x now to make it super simple i'm going to discard the pro v1x. And the z-star xv for the rest of the test because they're not the balls i particularly like those harder covered i prefer the softer covered golf balls so here we go titleist pro v1 new edition strixon's headstart new edition i'm going to hit wedge shots to 100 yards hit seven iron shots hit driver shots i'm looking out. For a few things spin with the wedges distance on the seven iron distance on the driver i'm also going to check out durability because the pro v1 i know is a very durable golf ball. And that's some part of why you end up spending a lot more money on them but if the shrinks just as good as durability then.
You're making a saving there potentially let's see what the like on performance let's hit wedges first [Music] so so after collecting all the data with both golf balls this is what i found out. So far i'm gonna start with the pro v1 because remember this is a brand new version. So after hitting it with sand wedge seven iron and driver i found that this new version goes exactly the same distances of the previous models i mean it's almost exactly the same golf ball bar a new lineup line. And to some way i'm not totally offended by that because probably one when they bring out a new version every two years they don't massively claim it's going to go 10 yards further. Or whatever it may be and it's not as if they bring out a new version and massively hike up the price we know it's gonna be 45 pound a dozen pretty much it's just a new version when you go into the shop you're gonna see a new box and a new golf ball now comparing it with the shrixen after hitting shots with sandra edge 79 and driver did i see much of a difference well the answer to that is no i didn't see much of a difference whatsoever not from the wedge shots the 79. Or driver the one thing and you can see the data there the one thing we can possibly pick up on is the strixing across the board wasn't quite as spinny as the pro v1 that was with all the shots i hit. So so far this shrieks and golf ball on performance and feel is absolutely stacking up with the pro v1. So why the difference in price so the final thing we're going to look at is durability because if this golf ball is cheaper lower price point by much. But cheaper and a pro v1 will it cut up more will this cover get damaged easier than the pro v1 which we know is super durable. So what i'm going to do i normally just on the golf course with a bunker i'll get 10 shots into the screen here with my love wedge as how as i can. And see how much damage is made to the cover now if there's not much difference why is there such a difference in price. But if this pro v1 is better. For durability that might be where that price difference looms so these are brand new versions of both golf balls they've never been hit before. So the results are in. And let me just summarize a few things so far the srixon has pretty much in every department stacked up in performance to the pro v1 so that final test was very important durability after hitting 10 shots as has i could with my lob wedge with both balls i'm impressed with both now the pro v1 as expected was pretty much perfect there was one. Or two tiny little scratch marks nothing to report at all and then.
The shrieksen well let me tell you there was also very little damage to the golf ball. And believe me i've done that test with other golf balls in the past and have scratched up really badly both the pro v1 and the zed star was fantastic. For durability i mean out of all of the testing around the green the wedge shots of 79 the driver i saw next.
To no difference at all between these two brands in fact i even chopped both golf balls open to see if there was much difference. And both three piece constructions different looking but again same principles so the only thing i can see that separates these two golf balls. And these two brands is the marketing. For many years pro v1 have established their place as number one bowling golf it's the ball that most people trust it's probably the ball i trust the most but if you're looking for alternatives and certainly if you're looking for a ball that's slightly cheaper i would recommend the zed star in the tricks and lineup guys thanks for watching stay tuned lots more to come and we'll see you next.
Time.
